Tax refunds for sports professionals
Professional athletes and sports players may be eligible to claim tax refunds on their expenses.
In many cases this can include travel costs, subsistence, accommodation, and laundry costs.
At Sutton McGrath Hartley we specialise in advising professionals across many different sports and levels of professionalism on their eligibility to claim. Once a claim has been identified we deal with everything on the players behalf, from negotiations with HMRC through to a successful refund of the tax owed.
Who can claim?
Any professional or semi-professional sports player can claim a tax rebate if using their own vehicle on any of the following:
- Travel expenses to:
- Away games
- Reserve games
- Training grounds
- Home games (if on loan from another club)
- Medical centres for injury treatment
Expense claims can also be made on any of the following:
- Kit and laundry costs
How far back can claims be made?
If a previous claim hasn’t been made, it can be possible to claim a tax rebate for historical expenses during the last four years.
How do you know if you can make a claim?
There is no cost from SMH to find out if you are eligible to make a claim. If there is no claim to be made then you have at least tried.
If there is a claim to be made, then SMH will deal with everything on your behalf until the tax refund has been made.
Can a sports player do this themselves?
Quite simply, yes. But claiming tax refunds is very complex and it is very important to get things right.
That’s what we are good at. We have many years’ experience in helping both high profile professionals and semi-professionals who combine their sport with another job, so you can rest assured you are in safe hands and that everything we do is compliant with the law.
We only charge a fee once a successful claim is made. Our fee is tailored to your specific requirements and will be agreed with you before any work is undertaken.
How much are you likely to receive?
Each case is different and dependent upon your individual circumstances. Some of our clients have made significant claims so it is worth making that initial enquiry to see how we can help you.
What do you have to do to in order to make a claim?
That’s the easy part, just contact SMH and we will do the rest.
We will check if you qualify for a refund, negotiate on your behalf with HMRC and process your refund directly to you.
We will guide you through the process every step of the way.
